The problem
Position-sensitive equipment needs a mount that returns to exactly the same place after every removal. Kinematic mounts and pins do this but add parts and cost; active positioning adds a feedback loop and calibration.
How coded magnets help
Correlated Magnetics Research's applications page names tripods, cameras, scopes, laser pointers and optics, and says Polymagnets that align and center give repeatable, reliable positioning every time without a feedback loop, active position control, recalibration or maintenance. Align pairs come in centering, rotational and lateral versions, with centering pairs offered at different levels of precision and off-alignment forgiveness, and rotational pairs with detents at set angles.
